Who Is Aisha Yesufu?

Aisha Somtochukwu Yesufu is one of the most popular female activists in Nigeria. She started the #BringBackOurGirls movement which was aimed at bringing the government’s attention to the popular chibok girls abduction. In April 14 2014, 200 girls were abducted from a secondary school in Chibok, Nigeria.

She has also been strongly involved in the #Endsars movement that aims at ending police brutality in Nigeria.

Aisha Yesufu Biography

Aisha Yesufu is from Agbede in Edo State Nigeria, she was born and raised in Kano state. Being born in a heavily patriarchal environment, Aisha noted that it wasn’t easy growing up as a girl. Aisha Yesufu loved reading while growing up, her love for books opened her eyes to a new world outside the life she knew and she wanted that for herself.

Growing up, Aisha had little friends, at the age of 11, most of her friends had already been married or worse, some died during child birth. She got married at the age of 24 and by the time she did, some of her friends were already grandmothers.

Aisha Yesufu Education Journey

Aisha Yesufu applied to enroll in the Nigerian Defense Academy(NDA) in 1991 but got rejected because she was a woman. She was admitted to Usman Danfodio University in 1992 but had to leave because the school closed down. The same year, she got admitted to study medicine in Ahmadu Bello University but also had to leave after the school closed down following the murder of a professor in 1994.

She completed her education in Bayero university and graduated with a degree in Microbiology.

Aisha Yesufu Husband and Children

Aisha Yesufu got married in the year 1996 to Aliu Osigwe Yesufu, currently they have two children Aliyah Yesufu and Amir Yesufu. She got married while still in the university.

She met her husband on December 13, 1996, they started dating in August 1997 and got married eight months after.

Aisha Yesufu met her husband at her uncle’s bachelor’s party, the very first party she attended in her life. Her husband and her uncle are friends and he was at the party as the chairman on the occasion and till date, her family members still call him chairman according to her.

Her husband, Aliu is a chartered Accountant and has been in the sector for than 30 years.
