Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corp(FRSC) has been approved by the government to wield firearms.

The House of Representatives Committee on FRSC made the announcement on Thursday in Abuja. In December 2018 this act was almost passed, when FRSC complained of over 70 deaths that year due to armed robbers. They pointed out that these deaths could have been avoided if they were armed.

Akinfolarin Mayowa, from the house of rep stated that 1992 Act of FRSC allowed the corps to carry guns. He made the disclosure during the corps’ 2020 budget performance and 2021 budget defence, on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Mayowa, the implementation has become necessary to ensure all laws are obeyed and it would also ensure the safety of the officers.

An FRSC member Solomon Maren, added that the committee would discuss the matter with the IGP, Mohammed Adamu.

They stressed the fact that many motorist threaten FRSC workers and the presence of firearms would reduce this problem. Mayowa disclosed that he would write to the president Mohammed Buhari for approval and also meet with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

Although the reasons are justified, it still causes among Nigerian citizens as many feel it would turn out bad. What is your take on this? Tell us using the comment section below.
