Nigeria’s former federal lawmaker, Adamu Garuba, has tagged the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, a notorious terrorist.
This was right after the detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader was discharged of treason-related charges by a Federal High Court on Thursday.
Nnamdi Okwu Kanu is a British-Nigerian political activist who supports Biafra’s independence from Nigeria. He is the founder and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which he established in 2014.
Nnamdi Kanu and Shekau are comparable terrorists – Adamu Garuba
IPOB’s principal goal is to reestablish the separatist state of Biafra, which existed in Nigeria’s Eastern Region during the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1970.
Kanu promoted Biafran separatism as the director of Radio Biafra, a United Kingdom-registered radio station.
Kanu was arrested on treason accusations on 14 October 2015 in Lagos, Nigeria, and has been jailed for more than a year, despite many court decisions ordering his release.
Despite the fighting, Kanu claimed that IPOB was committed to attaining Biafran independence through peaceful means. Interpol detained him in June and turned him over to Nigeria.
The Federal Government accused Nnamdi Kanu in the Federal High Court in Abuja on a 15-count charge of treasonable felony and terrorism. He was deported back to the nation on June 27 of last year.
Before the IPOB leader was extradited to Nigeria, a three-member appellate court panel chaired by Justice Hanatu Sankey ruled that the allegations against him did not identify the place, date, hour, or nature of the alleged actions.
This was a blatant disregard for international accords. The panel further stated that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case because the activist was kidnapped and sent to Nigeria in blatant violation of the African Union treaty and protocol on extradition.
Adamu tags Nnamdi Kanu a terrorist
In a Facebook post on Friday, Adamu referred to the IPOB commander as the worst “criminal possible known to humanity.”
The APC chairman insisted that Nnamdi Kanu was not similar to Abba Kyari, a suspended officer facing drug-related charges. He went on to link Kanu to the renowned terrorist Abubakar Shekau.
“I’m not sure why some of you believe I’m equating Nnamdi Kanu with Abba Kyari,” he continued.
Abba Kyari was detained for a drug-related infraction, which is a heinous crime, whereas Nnamdi Kanu is a terrorist.” Kanu and Shekau may be safely compared.” Adamu added.
