Michael was born on February 17, 1963, at Cumberland Hospital, Fort Greene, New York City.

His parents are Deloris (née Peoples), a bank employee, and James R. Jordan Sr., an equipment supervisor. He’s the fourth born with 2 older brothers (Larry Jordan and James R.), an elder sister(Deloris) and a younger sister (Roslyn).
His brother, James, retired from the command sergeant major in the U.S. Army in 2006. Growing up, in 1968, his family relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina, where he attended Emsley A Laney high school.
