Written by Omolola Akinyemi

Proudly from the streets of Surulere to mass media fame. He managed to turn his restive energy into impressive talking skills. The skilled hype man and talk guru sailed to broadcasting popularity – albeit with divinely-inspired nudges by his father and another mentor. Nigerian broadcaster and Video Jockey popularly called Dot2dtun is riding the airwaves, and flowing well in Nigeria’s entertainment industry circles. He has had his own share of controversies, but it did not stop him from shining all the same.

We will be embarking briefly on the life of Dot2dtun: skilled Video Jockey, dancer, actor, on-air personality, voice-over artist, and media executive. We will highlight his journey from childhood into Nigeria’s broadcasting industry, and his undisguised love for entertainment in general. His energy and creativity is a wonder to behold.

About Dot2dtun: His Background

Born Kayode Ojuolape Oladotun in April 1984, Dot2dtun is the first of three children. He is an indigene of Odigbo in Ondo State, southwest Nigeria. One of his siblings is the Nigerian music artist Pepenazi, who is also signed onto Dot2dtun’s record label, Ecleftic Entertainment. His father was a building engineer, and his mother a nurse.

Kayode attended Kemeesther Nursery and Primary school in Surulere, Lagos. From there, he proceeded to Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun State for his secondary education. He graduated from the Lagos State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication, further specializing in Advertising and Public Relations.

Dot2dtun: His Early Years

Kayode grew up playing football on the streets of Surulere in Lagos – probably with a bit too much spirit. He was a playful kid. His unbridled energy could have been responsible for being tagged ‘the family’s black sheep’. But his father recognized on time that the young lad needed a good place to channel that energy. Kayode’s father reportedly gave him a transistor radio as a present. He also bought newspapers regularly, and ensured his children watched educational television programs on a regular basis.

Thus, Kayode grew addicted to his radio. Over time, he developed a penchant for listening to several well-known Nigerian media personalities. It included the likes of Dan Foster, Steve Kadiri, Olisa Adibua, and Tope Brown. It soon became apparent that the combined experience of listening to these media giants impacted him in a huge way.

Dot2dtun’s Pioneer Career as a Dancer

On entering the university, Kayode  created a dance group named Xtreme Dancers. The group performed both on and off the university campus in several events, and they soon became very popular. Upon finishing graduate school, Kayode joined the dance group of Nonso Asobe (a.k.a. Don Flexxx) named Ignite, and continued to perform. For the record, Don Flexxx is the official choreographer of famous Nigerian music duo, P-Square

With his background in dance performances, he went on to feature in music videos of that time. Two of such videos were released in 2006 – singer D’banj‘s ‘Why Me’, and DJ Zeez’s ‘Same Ni’. However, Kayode’s career as a broadcaster had already begun full-scale; and so it stifled any further progress with dancing.

Dot2dtun: His Breakthrough in Broadcasting

The turning point for the young dancer came through one of his university lecturers – a man named Mr. Nzeribe. The lecturer was drawn to his sharp wit, spontaneity and skill with words; and so decided to guide him into broadcasting. The lecturer offered Kayode the opportunity to work as an intern in any of three prominent radio stations presented to him. This was in the year 2004. He subsequently chose Cool FM, where he interned for more than three years.

His chance finally came when Kayode was allowed to host a radio late-night show titled ‘Sleep Talk’. He engaged callers and listeners, where they freely discussed their worries and issues of the heart. The late-night show exposed him to broadcasting fame; and he anchored it for another three years. From there, he became a much sought-after radio and TV show host. He has proceeded to anchor popular radio and TV shows, concerts and competitions such as:

  • The Sunday Afternoon Show (2010)
  • Midday Oasis Show (2011)
  • Greatest Countdown on Earth Show (sponsored by Soundcity TV; 2014)
  • Star Music Trek Concert (2014, 2015)

His coverage of events and shows over the years is by no means limited to the ones mentioned above. There have been several others. Dot2dtun has an alluring voice – a swing between energetic delivery and smooth serenade delivered in a witty, eloquent presentation style. He is now recognized as one of the biggest and most talented voice-over artists across Africa. He is also a creative hype man and dancer, seen as an inspiration by many African youths.

Dot2dtun: Personal Life and Controversies

Kayode Oladotun got married to Omotayo Oyebanjo (Singer D’banj’s sister) in 2013; and they have two daughters. However, the marriage ended in a divorce riddled with controversies around November 2021.

Omotayo accused her ex-spouse of domestic violence (including forced abortion) and emotional abuse. There was also an ongoing child custody battle between them. Dot2dtun requested for the sharing of child custody from the court in April 2022, with both parties consenting. However, he accused Omotayo of denying him access to the children since December 2022.

It took several weeks later for Do2dtun to respond directly to Omotayo’s accusations. He went on social media to challenge Omotayo to produce actual proof of her claims. He insisted that Omotayo had been fabricating several lies to cover up for herself. He also insisted Omotayo had been collecting money from her brother D’banj in a dishonest way. And that she herself wanted a baby boy, as such initiated the abortion.

Dot2dtun instituted legal action against his ex-wife for violating the child custody agreement. The case is still in court.
