Tips on Accessorizing Your Outfits for a Standout Look in Nigeria

Accessorizing your outfits
Written by Omolola Akinyemi

Fashion is a well-developed art in Nigeria. Trust Nigerians to look super trendy for any occasion. The average Nigerian lady will stun you with creative ways of styling a simple fabric, her hair, and head covering. But the glory of it all is the choice of accessories to pair with your clothing. In this article, we will be offering you some basic tips on accesorizing your outfits for a standout look in Nigeria.

Well-chosen accessories can draw extra attention to your dressing and physical endowments. In truth, your clothing might look unexciting without accessorizing your outfits in a sensible way. You may simply appear incomplete, or even underdressed. The type of shoes, bags, jewelry, hair accessories, and belts you pair up with your clothing can add extra magic to your appearance.

But if you do not choose them wisely – you might look clownish, or bogus. So let’s delve into basic tips you should follow that can help in rightly accessorizing your outfits, and turn out looking your best.

Dressing and Accessorizing Your Outfits to Match the Occasion

Learn to consciously pick outfits suitable for an event or occasion, and choose suitable accessories to go with it. Don’t dress casual, or use excessively bold accessories for a formal event. That high-profile meeting, seminar, state ceremony or wedding will need you to tone down and look noble. Perhaps you can draw more attention to your shoes, bag and/or hair, or a pair of classy sunglasses with moderate jewelry.

On the other hand, you can give yourself a care-free, relaxed but cute look for an informal outing. A girls/guys night out, a beach outing, club or date outing can benefit from sassy trousers, skirts, tops and dresses. Add that oversized hat, designer sunglasses, exotic-looking bag, fun sandals, or some extra-large earrings and blings here and there. Just a couple of them, not too much.

Matching and/or Complementary Colors are Still in Season

The type of accessories you choose should project your personality. Nevertheless, pay attention to the harmony of colors. Pairing shoes and bag (or purse), head covering and bag, bag and belt, belt and head covering etc. by color still makes sense. Bringing accessories with matching or harmonious colors together is a sign of good taste – though it should be done moderately.

Draw Attention to Your Physical Endowments

Take a good look at yourself and identify your attractive features. You might want to draw attention to any of them, preferably one at a time. Do you have gorgeous lashes? Beautiful teeth or a sweet smile? Curvy waist or long, elegant legs? Or perhaps you just got yourself a stunning hairdo that should not be ignored. Focus on that one endowment, and accentuate it with suitable accessories.

If your hairdo looks exciting, then draw attention to it with an appealing hair accessory. It could be a stylish hair clip, claw, head band, hair bond, or even beads. Accentuate your face with shiny or bold jewelry, especially earrings and necklace. Show off your curves with a slim belt to draw attention to the waist area.

Statement Bags – A Great Idea

Statement bags and purses will help you to strike a noble, lady-like pose in public. Even men look noble with a signature wallet or bag. You should definitely invest in a quality and stylish bag that will last for a while. Especially when you carry important odds and ends around with you (such as your purse, cash, smartphone, ATM cards and the like).

A stylish signature bag will protect your personals and help you to stay organized, while complementing your appearance. Avoid indulging in cheap, outdated bags that may do poorly at accessorizing your outfits.

Choose One Statement Accessory

There should be that one accessory in your outfit that stands out above the rest. You should experiment with matching one shiny or bold accessory with less-pronounced ones.

A prominent earring should be worn with a simple, small necklace (you can balance it with a bold or matching pendant). If the necklace is bold, then other accessories should not be so loud. Only one of either your wristwatch or bracelet should appear bold – not both. Alternate that with an attractive ring, if you wish.

Balance is Everything: Here’s How

Striking a balance between your accessories and your clothing shows you have good imagination. It is a sign of maturity and good taste.

If you are wearing an outfit with bold patterns, then the matching accessories should be toned down. For instance, your head covering (such as a scarf, fascinator, or turban) can have solid colors to match; while your jewelry should be simpler. On the other hand, bright jewelry and head coverings can be paired with plain or simple-patterned clothing. That trick will even draw some attention to your skin tone.

Take One Last Look in The Mirror – and Edit

Put final touches to your dressing before leaving your house by checking yourself in the mirror. Find out if you have overdressed or ‘over-accessorized’, so to speak. It may just be possible that by removing (or adding) one accessory or another, you actually look better in your outfit. Make sure you are satisfied before you take off.

Your dressing could go a long way to make your outing a memorable one. Who knows – you might meet one or two persons that will brighten your day (or your future). And remember to enjoy your outing.
